Avocados also contain a small amount of tryptophan.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid used by the body in pathways that produce serotonin and melatonin.

 

Serotonin is involved in mood and many other functions, while melatonin helps regulate the timing of the sleep-wake cycle.

However, avocado is not an unusually concentrated source of tryptophan, so it would be misleading to describe it as a natural sleeping pill.

Folate and Nervous-System Function

Avocado is particularly rich in folate, one of the B vitamins.

 

Folate is involved in cell division, amino-acid metabolism, and the production and regulation of several compounds important for brain function.

Adequate folate intake supports overall nervous-system health, although the relationship between folate and sleep is complex and cannot be reduced to the idea that more folate automatically means deeper sleep.
